Bailey Smith undergoes shoulder surgery days after Geelong’s semi-final loss to Fremantle

Geelong superstar Bailey Smith has undergone shoulder surgery, just days after the Cats’ season came to a heartbreaking end.

Smith, who played the majority of the season with both shoulders heavily strapped, underwent surgery on his right shoulder.

It’s not yet known the severity of the injury, but Smith appeared in good spirits.

The 25-year-old averaged over 32 touches a game, and will be a short-priced favourite to win the club best and fairest award.

Smith was among the Cats’ best in last Friday’s semi-final loss to Fremantle, playing a major role in the comeback to finish with 29 touches.

But after briefly taking the lead in the third quarter, the Cats were eventually overran by the rampaging Dockers.

Geelong’s loss was further compounded by superstar free agent Zak Butters expressing his desire to join the Western Bulldogs.

The Cats are still tipped to be big players in the trade period with Toby Greene and Rowan Marshall heavily linked to the club, while they are also in the mix for Calsher Dear.

Meanwhile, Geelong will likely announce their initial list changes next week after the VFL grand final.

The Cats will play the Box Hill Hawks at Ikon Park on Sunday.

Veteran ruckman Rhys Stanley is in extreme doubt after sustaining a suspected torn pec during the preliminary final win over Port Melbourne.
