For the person who has everything — and doesn’t suffer from claustrophobia — a former Pentridge Prison cell is up for sale.
The decommissioned and renovated Melbourne jail, officially known as Her Majesty’s Prison Pentridge, once housed some of Australia’s most infamous inmates including Ned Kelly, Mark “Chopper” Read and Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in the country.

Now, a tiny slice of that history — Cell 120 in the old D Division — is on the market for the first time.
The 2‑by‑3‑metre cell is one of 200 that once held dangerous criminals. Today, it’s part of a boutique collection of storage spaces, many converted into wine cellars.
Ray White Coburg says it’s the first time a cell in the 19th‑century building has been publicly listed, with others usually traded quietly among serious collectors.

“Pretty much a collector’s item — that’s what we call it,” agent Raphael Calik‑Houston said.
“Just like buying a collectable car or owning a Rolex watch — there’s significance behind it.”
Around 50 former cells now house wine collections, with the naturally cool temperature making them ideal for storage.
It even comes with its original 130‑year‑old key, giving the new owner the rare privilege of getting in — and out — unlike its former occupants.
Some buyers have used their cells for books or memorabilia.
The complex offers 24/7 access, communal areas for events — and, according to some, a few lingering ghosts.
“It’s definitely haunted,” one owner joked.
Cell 120 is expected to fetch up to $90,000 when it goes to auction later this month.
